Wolverhampton Archaeology Group is able to offer 'Introduction to Archaeology' sessions in local schools. Our aim is for children to learn what an archaeologist does and to see how artefacts help us understand the past.

Typical activities include:

  • An introduction to stratigraphy, using a model to show that the lowest layers contain the oldest artefacts
  • Working out the diameter of a pot from a fragment using a pottery chart
  • Looking closely at pottery sherds to work out what the pot looked like when complete
  • Looking for identifying marks on objects such as clay pipe bowls
  • Handling small finds from different periods, for example flints, pottery, coins, bottles etc

Where appropriate, activities can be accompanied by worksheets.
